The Road to Oz
L. Frank Baum
Reilly & Britton 1909
First Edition. Hardcover. No Jacket. Good Condition. Fine-grained cloth binding in pastel green with red and forest green stamped illustrations. The text block is divided into eight sections, each section printed on a different color of paper (Off-white, Lavender, Gray, Baby Blue, Salmon, Tan, Light Green, Tan again). The plates are printed in black ink. There is standard shelfwear around the edges of the boards, bumping on the corners, and some visible fraying on the extremities of the spine. There is some light pencil marks and smudging on the title pages. Lighter smudging throughout, and tears in pages 157 and 159. The book has been well-loved, but it is a beautiful piece nonetheless. The attention to detail in its design is stunning, and it is unique in that it is the only book in the series to be originally published on colored paper. A first edition, this book is one of a limited run of 82 copies. It is the fifth book in Baum's beloved Oz series, whose influence still reverberates through children's media today.
