Mr Scarborough's Family
Anthony Trollope
Chatto & Windus, Piccadilly 1883
First Edition. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Rebound set of three volumes in viridian cloth, backstrip label in leather with delicate gilt lettering. The book is inscribed as a christmas gift to a loved one dated 1935, written in tight cursive ink in the cover page of volume one. Each volume has a book plate for a personal library. The quality of the books is quite consistent across the three volumes. The boards have very minor bumps on the top and bottom edges of the spine. A slight bump is present on the bottom edge of the front cover of volume one. Minor blistering on the cover of volume III. The interiors are all intact and are largely in great condition. There is some light foxing on the cover pages of all three, and a flattened crease in the title page of volume II. There are some occasional marks that appear to be fingerprints in the first 20 or so pages of volume II, and a bit of toning in the first few pages of volume III. A small annotation is made in pencil on page three of volume I over the single word 'cornet'. Very slight pull away from the hinge is visible in all three volumes in various, but the form and structure of the book remains unthreatened by this. No jacket. A classic realist novel of the late 19th century, Mr. Scarborough's Family interrogates the complex and difficult negotiations of wealth, inheritance, and class in the Victorian era; it exemplifies Trollope's ability to compellingly document growing pains of British society as middle class wealth steadily destabilized the reigning power of the aristocracy. A beautiful and rare first edition of a fascinating novel.
