Writes Prescott is the preface "The present work is the result of observations made during a two years' residence in Mexico, by a lady, whose position there made her acquainted with its society, and opened to her the best sources of information in regard to whatever could interest an enlightened foreigner." The influential travel narrative contains 54 letters Frances Erskine Inglis wrote from 1839 to 1842, during her husband's appointment as the first Spanish Minister to Mexico after the country gained independence.
